People have been constructing and walking on labyrinths for thousands of years. Smaller finger labyrinths can be traced with eyes and hands. Today, many individuals continue to perceive labyrinths as effective tools for meditation and prayer. A unicursal labyrinth consists of a single continuous path from the entrance to the center, devoid of any diverging routes.
The labyrinth featured in this application is inspired by the renowned design located at the Chartres Cathedral in France. This particular stone floor pattern was installed at the cathedral in the early 1200s and has since been replicated at various sites worldwide, including Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
The intricate design comprises eleven nested layers surrounding the central rose. While some versions may have fewer layers, they still encapsulate the essence of the original design. By utilizing a drag gesture, users can navigate a dot along the labyrinth's path, journeying from the outer edge to the center and back again.
Pinch gestures allow for zooming into the design, facilitating smoother movement of the dot. For some individuals, this closer perspective mirrors the experience of physically walking a labyrinth. Experiment with both zoom levels to determine your preference, and consider enabling automatic movement of the dot as an alternative exploration option.
